Medical texts are particularly sensitive because they affect so many aspects of human health. Whether it is about pharmaceutical information, manuals for medical equipment, clinical trials, reports, patient education or medical records, it is important that the text is written in the patient's or healthcare professional's native language and that all information is accurate.
When it comes to patient information, it is actually quite obvious that labelling and information should be in their native language to avoid accidents caused by improper use of the products. However, texts intended for doctors and other healthcare professionals may also need to be translated. Often, people rely on the staff understanding English, for example, but unfortunately, people are not always as fluent in their second or third language as they think. Even if one has good knowledge of a foreign language, it is easy to misunderstand important aspects of the text.
What does a medical translator do?
A question we often get is whether we or our translators are certified in medicine. The answer is that there is no official certification for medical translation in Sweden. The Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency's authorisation does not cover the medical field either.
A medical translator is a translator with special experience in translate medical texts. This implies knowledge of terminology and register within the field. The translator has often specialised in one or a couple of types of medicine or text. This is because the medical field is so extensive and has so many linguistic levels. The translator's task is to create a functional text in the target language, which is their mother tongue. They therefore ensure that the tone and form of expression are right for the intended target audience.
However, the translator is rarely a doctor or researcher themselves, even though many have some form of training in the subject. When it comes to sensitive information or text containing highly specific terminology, it is therefore important that it is also reviewed by an expert with the appropriate language skills. Nor do we check that the text complies with laws and directives for the intended market.
