We are increasingly receiving requests to translate into Arabic, Somali, Tigrinya, Persian, Dari, and other languages. Since these languages have become common in Sweden relatively recently, there is a shortage of trained translators who both know Swedish and have one of them as a mother tongue. In many cases, this is simply resolved by first translating the text into English. The English text can then be sent to a translator in Egypt, for example. Often, this works exceptionally well.

However, when the text deals with something specific to Swedish society – everything from waste management to the school system and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency – or when it concerns sensitive information that must under no circumstances be misinterpreted, there are a number of pitfalls that a translator who is unfamiliar with Sweden and Swedish culture and norms can fall into. How do you explain, for example, the difference between ”förskola” and ”förskoleklass”, or between ”sjukersättning” and ”sjukpenning” to an Eritrean who has never been to Sweden?
